Stephen Trimble

Cougars and the latest from Utah

Steve's book, Bargaining for Eden, will appear in bookstores in July. Ten years of fieldwork and writing led to these stories about how we make our decisions about the future of the lands we love. Steve's photo files from the project reach deep into the Wasatch Range, Snowbasin Resort, the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, and rural and wild landscapes in southern Utah.

This winter Steve traveled with cougar biologists in the Utah mountains, tracking mountain lions with hounds in the snow-covered ranges surrounding Salt Lake City. Capture day yielded stunning shots of a female cougar in the snow.

Steve was in Guatemala for Day of the Dead celebrations in Sumpango, where thousands of people come to see the village's enormous, astonishing kites. On assignment, he also visited the Spanish Colonial city of Antigua, the Mayan markets at Chichicastenango and Solola, the great ruins of Tikal, and the villages around Lake Atitlan.

Spring!

The Bluebells and Dutchman's breeches were spectacular in Manassas this year, with the Trillium Preserve in full bloom near the Shenandoah; there certainly are many things to photograph!

Additionally, we just returned from Arizona photographing the hummingbird migration, along with a sample of the animal diversity found in Madera Canyon. This includes Orioles, Doves, Warblers, and a large variety of Finch, a family of Quail and beautiful flowers and cacti from the desert.

We cherished old friends and made new ones on this trip, and we look forward to shooting with both again in the near future. For those who know us, it will make you smile to hear that Pat completed this entire trip with a digital camera, but claims he is making a T-shirt that says "Long live film!" (soft smile).

Work continues on the Yellowstone/ Grand Teton book, while we both shoot and continue our daily routine.

Check the site for new photos! Hope you are enjoying the spring shooting as much as we are.

Your Taters,

Shirley and Pat Collins
