Cecropia Tree, Yagrumo hembra, Cecropia peltata, also called trumpet-tree, and snakewood. Moraceae and Urticaceae, Cecropiaceae; The branches and leaf petioles of Cecropia species are often hollow and can harbour stinging ants. The trees attract the ants by means of producing a honey-like sap and the ants respond by working to keep the tree free of leaf-eating pests - which can include humans.Cecropia is a Neotropical genus consisting of 61 recognized species with a highly distinctive lineage of dioecious trees. The genus consists of pioneer trees in the more or less humid parts of the Neotropics, with the majority of the species being myrmecophytic. One of the most interesting symbioses in the rainforest exists between the Cecropia tree and the Cecropia ant (Azteca sp.) The Cecropia trees recruit ants to live in them and protect the tree. The ants drive off herbivorous insects, attack herbivorous vertebrates, and remove epiphytes and competing plants. Their wastes also provide a lot of nitrogen to the plant. The plant provides them with housing (inside hollow stems) and gylcogen-rich bodies. At least, that's the simple explanation of the relationship. The Cecropia leaf is quite popular among the Amazonian Indian tribes who use it for its anti-inflammatory qualities in the treatment of lung, kidney and rheumatic inflammations. For instance, these tribes prepare a tea made of leaves to treat respiratory problems and diabetes. Berg and Rosselli state that the genus is characterized by some unusual traits: spathes fully enclosing the flower-bearing parts of the inflorescences until anthesis, patches of dense indumentums (trichilia) producing Mullerian (food) at the base of the petiole, and anthers becoming detached at anthesis. Cecropia is most studied for its ecological role and association with ants. Asa Wright Nature Center, Comprising nearly 1,500 acres of mainly forested land in the Arima and Aripo Valleys of the Northern Range, The Centre's main facilities are located on a former cocoa-coffee-citrus plantation, previously known as the Spring Hill Estate. Velvet Worm or Peripatus, Macroperipatus torquatus; These organisms are an ancient group believed to be related to arthropods. It is the largest known onychophoran. M. torquatus also possesses paired jaws with blades that face backwards and move alternatingly (Read and Hughes, 1987). Another distinguishing feature is the integument which is comprised of flat scales that overlap in a regular arrangement resulting in a hexagonal pattern (Read, 1988). There are also very specifically modified quadrangular projections along the dermis of the integument, a feature believed to be seen only in this species (Oliveira et al., 2012). This species is endemic to Trinidad and is found only in the Northern Range. This nocturnal carnivore lives on the forest floor, usually under or within the layer of leaf litter. Foraging is conducted by sweeping its head from side to side using slow steady movements, potential prey is stealthily inspected using the antennae which recoil gently and quickly so as to avoid detection by the potential prey (Read and Hughes, 1987). If prey is deemed suitable, Macroperipatus torquatus ambushes it by squirting a proteinaceous glue from its oral papillae (Fig. 2). This glue-like substance can be squirted a distance of up to 4 cm and serves to entangle the prey and prevent its escape. Next it locates a weak area between the thorax and abdomen of the prey and uses its jaws to bite through the membrane in this area (Read and Hughes, 1987). It then immobilizes its prey by injecting its saliva into the site and then extends its oral cone which it uses in conjunction with its jaws to extract the flesh of the prey. This organism is able to utilize its predatory strategies for defence as well. When threatened it may squirt glue in a defensive capacity (Read and Hughes, 1987) so as to stop predators and allow for escape. (The Online Guide to the Animals of Trinidad and Tobago).
